there was #2016 at Harlem Terminal on October 10 1974.

Also, according to them, page 115, all 180 were on the LDR in 1975.

I can't be authoritative on that, but the first I heard about any falling off the roster was after the 1977 cars falling off the L at Lake and Wabash.

An awful lot of these (as well as the 2400 reported at Chicago-L.org) seem to have succumbed to fires, even though the wooden car era ended in the 1950s. I guess something next to them burned and engulfed them.

Yeah your right. It should read 1993. (at least I got the month and day right) :P Just about all of them were scrapped that year except for a few in 1992 and some of the ones that were wrecked. I'm kind of puzzled why this info wouldn't be on a chicago-l.org being that it deals with history. My info for this list is very credible, I wouldn't put it out there if I was unsure of it.

Aside from the question whether he has the same sources (for instance, he hasn't updated his car assignment page in two years), there is also the question of editorial judgment. For example, for most purposes, the statement "By the beginning of 1994,all the 2000s had been scrapped or otherwise retired from service,about the same time the last of the new 3200 series cars were put into service" is adequate and accurate. I would have added "subject to a couple of accidents and fires (link)" and, because of the Green Line cause and effect question, changed "beginning of 1994" to "the end of 1993," but that's a matter of editorial emphasis.

A similar editorial judgment entered into when andrethebusman thought that the Wikipedia CTA page needed a complete CTA bus roster from CSL Twin Coach bus 1101. He might have had sufficient original research to back that up, but besides their bar on original research, I doubt that anyone in the general public is that interested, for the purpose of a summary history.

Yes, the 2000s were retired by December 1993. During the last month or so of Green Line service prior to its closure for a two-year rehabilitation, it was operated entirely with 2600-series equipment (#2601-lower 2700s). When it reopened in May 1996, it was re-equipped entirely with 2400s.

Yes I remember. At the same time the Red Line was also operating trains using both 2400s and 2600s.

I just loved that ugly front end of the 2000 series cars.

Depends on the eye of the beholder (sort of similar if people like pugs). Those were the first with the molded front end, and maybe they looked better with the green and white than silver and black. While later ones had molded front ends, they were fairly flat. I wonder about changing the red white and blue on 2400s to gray, and if, in fact, the 5000s are as portrayed, I would have rather had one of the alternative designs.

I remember when I was a kid seeing those 2000 series cars on the LDR, We would ride a 6000 from Armitage to downtown, once in downtown, see one of those 2000s, I thought they were kind of creepy looking. But they always grabbed my attention because they looked different than other CTA cars. Even to this day I still love that front end, brings back memories from my childhood. The first (center door) 4000s, 6000s and the 2000s I think were the coolest looking rapid transit cars Chicago ever operated. Not take away from the 2200s, 2600s or the 3200s. Today the 3200s are my favorite rapid transit car, because of the cross combination look of the 2200 and 2600 series cars.

According to the Spring 1994 First & Fastest the last in-service moves of the 2000 was made by 2035+2036+2067+2068 on Sunday Dec 19th, 1993 when they ran a single round trip from Harlem to the Loop and back. On 20th these four cars plus 2183+2184 moved to Skokie.

They also report that 2007+2008 (as 1892+1992) was in use on the Green Line on 1/7/1994 the last weekday before the shutdown.

The last 3200 set to be delivered 3439+3440 arrived 12/22/93. 3457 arrived later in 1994.

That would indicate that the ones with the roof platform for the pantograph (3441-3456) predated 3440. Does anyone remember if that was the case?

Yes they had already arrived and all 16 had entered service on the Yellow Line. 3440 was the last of the batch 3417-40 built with conduit and other provisions for future installation of pantographs.

With the closure of the Green Line 2601-2660 went into storage at Skokie and were rebuilt before use again. 2660 was damaged at the time and 2659 was coupled to 3146 which also went into storage. 3145 came back from repair at Deleware Car co on 3/16/94.

Updated this with a few links to pictures and new info concerning #2007-08. Kind of nice to see pictures of the wrecks and important info in the evolution of the series.

Didn't do much for the couple of automobiles parked [on presumably Circle Ave.], either.

Also, anyone know how it did a belly flop over the edge, or why so many modern cars burned?

I guess you missed my link on #2003-04, that was the striker that struck #2130 making it do a nose dive on someone's brand new Caddy Eldorado. Usually that's a spot for the head of that line operations or lead supervisor to park there car. i guess it was a bad day to come to work. :lol:

I sure hope IRM will not wreck these. I got 2 pictures of these trains.

I doubt that IRM will scrap them, but they might just become a couple of hulks in the barns, sort of like street car 4001 was for a long time (from this gallery, apparently they got it back on trucks, but certainly not restored).

Here's a statement from another board (Hicks Car Works).

"As for the "1892", I would not want to suggest that if people start offering a little money that the body might be saved. The guys who are actually doing the work have a plan for what's going to be saved and what extra parts are needed, they make the decisions based on the available resources of time, effort, and money, and that has to be respected. The 2153-2154 are going to represent this series of car with the actual service paint scheme."

Also remember at IRM a car has to "buy" it's track and barn space. Would there be enough donations to cover 4 2000s?

That "list" doesn't establish @BusHunter's point. The first 2 cars in the picture look normal, if it were 1964, not 1982. Of course, the tipoff that they are a restoration is that the 2000s behind them are in the 2600s livery.

This was done around the time #6101-02 was painted to its heritage colors. (Which has to be 1982 or earlier) Funny if you look at the book CTA at 45, I believe they show #6101-02 with a spanking hot new paint job. Picture was dated 1989-90. So I always assumed 1989-90 was when #6101-02 was painted the heritage colors but this facebook topic says otherwise. o.O I couldnt really say what was on any lines before 1989 as thats when I started  railfanning. I was just familiar with West/Northwest from my childhood. I remember seeing #6101-02 but I never saw #2001-02 in those colors. It couldnt have retired in that livery.
